SUMMARY:Being Human Festival 2021
DESCRIPTION:Being Human is the UK’s only national festival of the humanities. \nA celebration of humanities research through public engagement\, it is led by the School of Advanced Study at the University of London\, the UK’s national centre for the pursuit\, support and promotion of research in the humanities. The festival works in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy to support humanities public engagement across the UK. \nEvery year we help researchers in the humanities – from literature and history\, languages and philosophy\, art history and classics\, and more – produce enjoyable events for public audiences that emphasise working with local communities to share ideas for mutual benefit. \nThe festival asks\, What are the humanities? \nThe festival defines the humanities broadly to encompass the subject areas traditionally associated with the study of the human world. This includes\, for example\, art history\, archaeology\, architecture\, classics\, cultural studies\, history\, film\, languages\, literature\, musicology\, philosophy\, theatre studies\, and religious studies. \nThe festival is not limited to humanities research but builds upon it\, welcoming knowledge from all disciplines in addition to core study of the humanities. We celebrate humanities “plus” – social science\, natural science\, performing and fine arts\, medicine\, all areas of research can work with the humanities to enhance understanding.

SUMMARY:Renaissance Humanism\, Democracy\, and the University
DESCRIPTION:How does an engagement with Renaissance Humanism help us understand the contemporary role\, and potential futures\, of the university’s contributions to democratic life? Join us for a conversation between Christopher Celenza\, a scholar of the Renaissance and Dean of the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences at Johns Hopkins\, and Chad Wellmon\, a scholar of knowledge and information and Professor of German and History at UVA. They will discuss the connections between their two new books – Celenza’s The Italian Renaissance and the Origins of the Modern Humanities & Wellmon’s Permanent Crisis: The Humanities in a Disenchanted Age – and how their research shapes their perspectives on the contemporary university. \nThe conversation will be moderated by Jacqueline Allain-Montagne\, a specialist on education and democracy in the ancient world\, who was recently hired in the Classics Department as part of the Democracy Initiative’s faculty hiring initiative.

SUMMARY:Self-knowledge\, art\, and knowledge of patients: November 24\, 3-4:15 PM CST
DESCRIPTION:Self-knowledge\, art\, and knowledge of patients: a virtual event with James Louie\, MD. From the description: \nJoin James Louie\, MD ’65\, Professor Emeritus of Medicine/Rheumatology at UCLA\, for “The Art of Medicine Comes from Knowing Our Patients: Pierre-Auguste Renoir\, Paul Klee\, Ruth Asawa.” Dr. Louie will highlight the life and work of these three artists with a focus on their rheumatic diseases—Pierre-Auguste Renoir with rheumatoid arthritis\, Paul Klee with systemic sclerosis\, and Ruth Asawa with lupus. Some of the artists were able to manage their diseases through the grit of their own determination\, the support of family and friends\, and the best medical advice and therapies available during their lives. Some used their art to express their pain and turmoil\, while others preferred to ignore and transcend their pain through their art. Dr. Louie gives patients hope for coping with their rheumatic diseases by illustrating how famous artists managed.  \nFor other posts on medical humanities\, including art and medicine\, see here. \nh/t Karrie Stewart

SUMMARY:Whiting Fellowships for Public Engagement in the Humanities
DESCRIPTION:Whiting Fellowships for Public Engagement in the Humanities: nominate your colleagues and / or apply! \nThe Whiting Public Engagement Programs\, including the Public Engagement Fellowship and the Public Engagement Seed Grant\, are designed to celebrate and empower humanities faculty who embrace public engagement as part of the scholarly vocation. The programs fund ambitious\, often collaborative projects to infuse into public life the richness\, profundity\, and nuance that give the humanities their lasting value. Over time\, we hope the program will also build a community of faculty dedicated to this form of service; underscore just how essential the realm of ideas is in helping us absorb the news of the day\, participate as citizens\, and live a full life; and ultimately help to restore broader faith in the value of advanced work in the humanities. \nThese two programs are entirely separate: aspiring fellows need not have received a Seed Grant\, and receiving a Seed Grant does not automatically qualify a grantee for a future Fellowship. Both programs support ambitious projects infusing into public life the richness\, profundity\, and nuance that give the humanities their lasting value. The stage of a project will determine the relevant program. \nGuidelines may be found here.

SUMMARY:Being Human Festival\, 14-23 November 2019
DESCRIPTION:Being Human Festival: celebrating the UK humanities in various forms\, November 2019. From the announcement: \nThe humanities help us understand what it means to be human. We think that new ideas in this area – from archaeology\, art history\, philosophy\, languages\, literature\, history\, classics\, cultural studies\, music\, theatre and theology – should be open to everyone. \nBeing Human is the UK’s only national festival of the humanities. A celebration of humanities research through public engagement\, it is led by the School of Advanced Study at the University of London\, the UK’s national centre for the pursuit\, support and promotion of research in the humanities\, in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy. \nHeld in November each year\, the nationwide festival brings together universities\, museums\, galleries\, libraries\, community and commercial partners to stage stimulating and engaging activities that make research accessible and relevant\, strengthen community identity\, and increase understanding of the relevance of the humanities to everyday life. \nEvery year we support researchers in the humanities – from art history and classics\, literature and languages\, history and philosophy – to produce non-traditional events and activities with a strong emphasis on co-production and mutual benefit.
