Free speech and the humanities: do the humanities foster, or inhibit, freedom of expression? The author decries the “identity politics” and “improper advocacy” among the humanities, which undermine open, rigorous inquiry. From the article:

Even the Renaissance is being redefined: it is now clumsily and in my view inaccurately called “Early Modern.”…. To break through the stalemate and reestablish free speech on campus, educators must first turn away from the sprawling cafeteria menu of over-specialized electives and return to broad survey courses based in world history and culture, proceeding chronologically from antiquity to modernism. Students desperately need a historical framework to understand both past and present.
