The “third culture” integrating science and humanities: employing a term developed by C.P. Snow and John Brockman, an Italian astronomer reflects on the creative way forward:

Emotion therefore is common to science and art, humanistic and scientific culture. Emotion is conveyed through language. Emotion and language (be it literary, artistic or scientific) are the links between the two cultures, between science and humanities…. A life in which science and philosophy co-exist harmoniously is a life that finds its authentic meaning and thus happiness in the true sense, in the Greek sense of the term. It is happiness that is not a result of a simple quest for pleasure, but of obtaining eudaimonia, that is to be accompanied by one’s own benevolent spirits…. Our awareness must be able to move us into a ‘third culture’ where emotion and empathy are indispensable ingredients next to logic and technology, where science recognizes its full range of awareness and where technology once again becomes merely an instrument serving human responsibilities.
