I was at Lascaux IV with a group of alumni from Duke University in June. I had not flagged this visit on our tour in advance, thinking – falsely – that it would just be routine museum stop. I and many others were were left speechless by the visit. One quickly forgets upon entering the “cave” that it is a reconstruction and instead one has. sense of awe, wonder, yes, even a sense of the sacredness of this site or the the sacred quality that it had to have had to its makers 20,000 years ago. The reconstruction was done milllimeter by millimeter with up-to-date laser and computer-guided imaging technology. So flawless, so perfect is the effect that one can see how the original artists used the curvatures of the stone wall to simulate muscles and movement of the animals. It is an inspiring example of the capabilities of using today’s technology and brilliant architectural design to bring alive artworks from the deep past. Bravo! Go to Lascaux! Well worth a trip.
